Brewham Lodge press release

09/01/2017

Our team at Brewham Lodge is led by experienced Yard Manager Ruth, who has worked with us before and has move from West Sussex with her family.  Ruth is supported by Jemma, who has moved from Surrey to continue working with us, and locally recruited Edward, who completes the current team, helped by Ruth’s daughter Abigail.

Whilst Ruth concentrates on running the Brewham operation, Founder Graham Oldfield will focus on his role as Welfare Officer, particularly advising on the care of our more vulnerable horses, recruiting new life-time keepers, and building our network of foster carers.

Chair of Trustees Jane Kuhler commented: “This move to Somerset has enabled us reorganise the charity to better cope with the challenges we face in in the future.  An important next step for us is to make new friends and contacts in Somerset; we would very much welcome potential volunteers, who would like to help us fulfil our mission.”

Finance Director Colin Passmore commented: “Strengthening the financial position of the charity is key to securing the future of our horses.  This move and reorganisation will help in that regard and allow us further our mission.”

The aims and objectives of The Racehorse Sanctuary are the rescue, rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming of thoroughbred horses, particularly ex-racehorses, on a lifetime basis; providing long- term care for animals that are not suitable for rehoming; raising awareness of the career opportunities available to ex-racehorses; providing advice to owners on the care ex-racehorses, particularly those with racing-related issues; and addressing the problems of older animals.

March 2016 marked the 10th Anniversary of the charity.  At which point we had successfully found new careers and new homes for close to 100 horses, now dispersed all over the country.   For otherwise sound horses, who cannot be ridden, we have worked to identify and fill a need for companion horses.  To expand our capacity we have trialled the use of foster homes, as part of the on-going process of finding long term homes for our horses.
